Direct Reports: Centre Manager

Hours: 37.5 hours per week to be worked flexibly between the hours 8.00am and midnight, Monday to Sunday. (A normal shift pattern will be Monday to Friday 8.00am – 3.00pm one week and 3.00pm to 10.00pm the following week, Saturdays 8.00am – 2.00pm and cover is also required for functions and events – Time in Lieu will be provided if the relief janitor is not available to cover these functions).

Salary:  £15,350

Fixed Term contract for 2 years with possible extension, subject to funding

 

Background and Purpose

The NCT Centre is a Big Lottery funded purpose built building for the community of Newmains.  It is community owned, managed by Newmains Community Trust and act as a focal point for community activities. The Centre will be opened in July 2015 to serve Newmains and District Communities and through local partnership working, aims to deliver activities and services to meet community needs.  The purpose of this role is to assist with the effective running and availability of the NCT Centre for provision of quality services, sustainability of the organisations and benefits to communities

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

The main role of the Caretaker is to assist the Centre Manager with the day to day operations and security of the NCT Centre and, to provide assistance and support users of the building and facilities.

 

  1.  To ensure the security and proper use of the community centre.
  2. To be responsible for the security of the premises ensuring all windows are closed and doors are locked at the end of the day. General cleaning of the NCT occupied areas and toilets and surrounding area
  3. To inspect the interior and exterior of the building for general cleanliness on a daily basis.
  4. To conduct a weekly check for any defects and malfunctioning equipment, reporting defects and where possible making good any defects where appropriate.
  5. Carry out preparation for functions, including larger functions and, returning of rooms for everyday use on completion
  6. Assist user groups with setting up of rooms were necessary
  7. Safe storage, use and disposal of caretaking/cleaning materials the safe usage and storage of associated equipment.
  8. To ensure all relevant inspection or other paperwork is completed as required.
  9. To ensure adequate quantities of toiletries are available in toilets as required.
  10. To comply with NCT Centre policies and procedures including health and safety.
  11. To undertake any other reasonable task as determined for operational needs.

 

Relationships and Accountability

Internally the post holder reports to the NCT Centre Manager.  For day to day work liaison internally with other NCT Centre Staff and externally, liaison with NCT Centre users, partners and service providers as necessary.

Performance will be measured against targets agreed with the NCT Centre Manager. The post holder will be required to provide evidence of attainment of targets through supervision and an annual appraisal.

 

Person Specification and Experience

 

The Post holder will have:

  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Ability to carry out daily checks safety and security checks
  • Knowledge and understanding of COSHH regulations and safe working practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Manual Handling with the physical ability to undertake manual handling tasks.
  • Ability to act on instruction.
  • A commitment to continual improvement and learning
    • Tact, diplomacy and skills in handling people
    •  An ability to work without supervision, as a team member and to take the initiative where necessary
    • A demonstrated sensitivity to the management structure of a voluntary organisation
    • Ability to make best use of resources provided
    • A willingness to be flexible in approach to work and working hours
    • A friendly and welcoming manner

Additional Information

The post holder may be required to work outside of the normal working hour as either flexible hours or Time off in Lieu (TOIL) that will be agreed in advance with the post holder. 

The post holder will benefit from 20 days and 8 statutory paid holiday per annum.

NCT Centre activities include working with children and vulnerable adults, this post-holder must be willing to undertake a Disclosure Scotland check as a requirement for this post.
